Ashley’s story began under extraordinary circumstances. Born while her biological mother was incarcerated, she was later placed in the foster care system when her family was unable to provide the care she needed. At four years old, her life changed when she was adopted by two loving educators in the Richmond Public School System, Howard and Edith Hopkins. Already parents to one biological son, Avi D. Hopkins, they longed for a daughter to complete their family. As the story is told, their son played an unforgettable role in the decision: he chose Ashley by handing her his teddy bear. That simple gesture marked the beginning of a family bond that would profoundly influence the woman she would become.

At the age of 19, Ashley became a mother to her only child, her daughter Tousean. During her late teens and early adulthood, Ashley also experienced significant health challenges of her own. Those experiences gave her an early and personal understanding of what it means to depend on healthcare professionals during vulnerable moments and sparked her desire to enter the medical field.

Ashley began her healthcare career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), providing private-duty care similar to the care she had seen provided by members of her own family, including her grandmother and great-aunt. She later became a Medical Assistant, which opened the door to working in a hospital setting.

After approximately a year in the hospital environment, Ashley realized that her greatest opportunity to make a broader impact might exist beyond direct patient care. She transitioned to the business and operational side of healthcare with a specific purpose: to understand how healthcare systems work from the inside, identify gaps that negatively affect patients and members, and help develop solutions that create a better healthcare experience.

Ashley quickly recognized that advancing professionally—and gaining the knowledge necessary to influence healthcare operations—would require continuing her education. While building her career and caring for her family, she returned to school and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting followed by a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration from Strayer University. The combination of financial education, healthcare administration, clinical experience, and operational expertise would ultimately give her a unique perspective on how healthcare organizations can balance regulatory, financial, and operational responsibilities while never losing sight of the people they serve.

In 2009, Ashley entered the health insurance industry with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. She continued expanding her knowledge of the insurance industry and obtained her insurance license in 2018. In 2019, she transitioned into the Medicare Advantage space, where her professional focus increasingly centered on healthcare operations, regulatory requirements, member experience, enrollment, compliance, and operational oversight.

While building her professional career, Ashley’s personal life also came full circle. In 2016, she married her childhood sweetheart, Linwood Harris, beginning a new chapter grounded in love, partnership, and family. Her marriage became another important part of the foundation that supported her as she continued pursuing her professional goals and navigating the triumphs and challenges that would shape her life’s purpose.

Driven by a desire to provide a better life for her family while creating meaningful change within healthcare, Ashley worked her way into increasingly complex operational roles. Her experience has allowed her to provide guidance to new and developing private health insurance plans, helping organizations build processes, identify operational gaps, strengthen oversight, and remain focused on delivering a positive healthcare experience when members need their health plan most.

In 2023, Ashley’s life changed in a way no professional experience could have prepared her for. She suddenly lost the love of her life—her daughter, Tousean—from complications associated with sickle cell trait, a risk Ashley had never understood could potentially have such devastating consequences. Her daughter’s passing left an immeasurable void and also entrusted Ashley with another important role: raising her grandson, Tousant.

Grief required Ashley to redefine her life, her priorities, and ultimately her purpose. As she found a new rhythm, her personal loss strengthened an already deeply rooted commitment to healthcare advocacy. Her experiences as a patient, caregiver, wife, mother, grandmother, healthcare professional, and health insurance leader have given her a perspective that extends far beyond policies, procedures, and regulations.

Today, Ashley is especially committed to identifying gaps in healthcare and developing meaningful solutions for the people who can be most affected by them. She believes individuals should not receive inadequate care simply because they do not understand healthcare terminology, insurance requirements, their rights, or the complicated protocols and procedures that govern the healthcare system.

For Ashley, advocacy means helping ensure that people have access to understandable information, appropriate guidance, and compassionate support during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. She believes every person facing a health crisis deserves to be treated with dignity, to understand their options and rights, and to receive the help and care they need.

Ashley currently serves as an Oversight and Monitoring Manager at PSW in Washington State, where she applies her healthcare operations and insurance experience to strengthen organizational performance, regulatory compliance, operational accountability, and the member experience.

Her journey is far from complete. Ashley plans to pursue a Ph.D. as the next chapter of her education and professional development. Her long-term vision includes expanding her consulting work and using the combination of her education, professional expertise, and lived experience to help healthcare organizations identify systemic gaps and develop practical solutions that improve the experience of the people they serve.

From a child whose future was once uncertain, to a teenage mother facing her own health challenges, to a wife, healthcare professional, insurance leader, grandmother, and advocate, Ashley Hopkins Harris has built a life centered on turning experience into purpose.

Ashley serves as a deaconess and mentors six young women between the ages of 11 and 23, offering guidance rooted in faith, leadership, encouragement, and personal development. Through mentorship, she hopes to help younger women recognize their own voices and potential.

Away from work, Ashley enjoys traveling, bowling, and spending meaningful time with her family. After experiencing the devastating loss of her daughter three years ago, she stepped into the responsibility of raising her young grandson while continuing to contribute professionally during a major healthcare merger and health plan development initiative. The experience deepened her empathy and reinforced the importance she places on family, resilience, and compassion.
